At RNIB Pears Centre, we provide a stimulating, creative and purpose-built setting for children and young people with complex needs and vision impairment to live, learn and grow.

We support children to make progress, to develop their independence, and to make their own choices.

Our co-located school and children's home offer flexible packages of support to children and families, depending on what you need:

  • Education with up to 52-week residential care

  • Education only (if your child lives at home, for example)

  • 24-hour residential and/or nursing care only.

  • This includes therapies and health support, depending on what your child needs.

    Education and outreach

If you're looking for a specialist school, our education celebrates a child's abilities and stimulates all of their senses. Our broad, balanced and relevant curriculum is fully personalised to meet individual learning needs.

Ofsted rated our school as 'Outstanding'! This shows that we're very effective in helping children to make progress in their learning and development.

Our national outreach service offers practical support to pupils and educational advice and guidance to professionals and parents. We can also mentor students and provide braille tuition.

    Therapies

Our in-house therapy and school team offers specialist expertise in vision impairment, multi-sensory impairment, complex needs and learning disabilities, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, behaviour management and mobility/habilitation. Hydrotherapy, music therapy, rebound therapy, clinical psychology, occupational therapy and medical led support of health and wellbeing are also part of our provision. Our new hydrotherapy pool is also improving the quality of life and learning experiences for children and young people.

    Specialist care and leisure

Sometimes, the chance to share the care of a child can help to relieve pressure on families. Our children's home offers 24-hour care all year round, with waking night staff in spacious bungalows.

Each young person living with us has their own bedroom, which is made safe and personal to them. We support children to access a range of activities and community events, like pop concerts and swimming.

If your child has high health and medical needs, our nursing care offers rehabilitation and a real alternative to long stays in hospital.

    Needs we support

  • Vision impairment

  • Multi-sensory impairment and deafblindness

  • Significant learning difficulties and disabilities

  • Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)

  • Physical disabilities

  • Communication difficulties

  • Additional medical and health needs, including long-term ventilation or life-threatening or life-limiting conditions

  • Additional emotional and behavioural difficulties

Our board of trustees allows us to accommodate a number of children who do not have vision impairment as their primary need.
