Cambian Wing College is an independent specialist College, providing a high standard of education and care for students 16-25 with Asperger's Syndrome or high-functioning Autism and associated mental health difficulties. Offering the potential of day placements for local students and residential care for 38-52 weeks, they successfully support students with a broad range of complex needs including challenging behaviour.
All of the young people at Wing College face challenges in everyday life as a result of their learning difficulties and mental health; so Wing College provide bespoke programmes that ensure they can experience appropriate and holistic support to improve their health and well-being, as well as their educational outcomes.
Wing College are fully funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to deliver high-quality, bespoke study programmes for all students. These study programmes include a broad range of learning opportunities and work based learning experiences that challenge and extend learners skills and knowledge. Based on each student's ability and ambitions, these programmes are designed to include a broad range of academic and vocational learning opportunities, alongside work based learning, enrichment and tutorial; allowing preparation for adulthood and their chosen next steps.
The core skills, academic and vocational pathways that Wing College offer range from Entry Level and Functional Skills to GCSEs and A-Levels, plus personal development opportunities and a comprehensive work related learning and work experience programme.
Wing College also offer Bush Craft as part of their 'Outdoor Learning Provision'. This is an experience of the world beyond the class room and is a student-led approach. Aimed at supporting the students to develop their confidence, developing problem solving skills, peer interaction, social and physical skills as well as, developing and strengthening self-motivation and self-esteem. Using a small peaceful section of woodland at one of our local sister Schools, students will be able to take part in activities such as bug hunting, tree identification, learning knots, building fires, cooking on an open fire and building shelters.
The team at Wing College recognise that students with additional needs may require additional support that is not ordinarily available. With this in mind, teaching groups are usually no larger than six students and support is provided by a highly skilled and knowledgeable specialist education, care and therapy staff. All environments around the College are carefully designed to provide the best possible sensory environment to encourage engagement and learning.
Understanding the individual needs of our students is essential to supporting their development - Wing College believe that a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome or high-functioning autism does not predict behaviour, or dictate support requirements. Every student is unique and these positive approaches are embedded across education and the waking-day curriculum for those that live in student accommodation. Their range of multidisciplinary therapies are delivered by a highly skilled and passionate team who work together to create a holistic, caring environment for every young person enrolled at Wing College.
